Antisemitism has not disappeared, but neither does it always appear in an explicit or easily recognisable form. It adapts to new political, social and technological contexts, draws on older prejudices and myths, and combines them with contemporary events, anxieties and conflicts. It may be expressed through familiar stereotypes and conspiracy theories, coded words and visual symbols, distorted representations of the Holocaust, or content that circulates rapidly through digital media and social networks.
In this module, we will examine how historical antisemitic ideas are reshaped and reused in contemporary public discourse. We will explore how the history and memory of the Holocaust can be distorted, instrumentalised or emptied of meaning, but also how responsible memorialisation and education can help preserve historical knowledge and strengthen awareness of the dangers of antisemitism. We will also consider how contradictory stereotypes can be used to portray Jews as responsible for entirely opposing developments, and why conspiracy theories remain so adaptable and persistent.
Recognising antisemitism requires more than identifying openly hostile statements. It involves paying attention to context, sources, recurring narratives, visual language and the function a message performs. At the same time, responsible analysis requires us to distinguish between evidence and assumption, criticism and demonisation, historical comparison and distortion, and legitimate disagreement and prejudice.
Through lessons, interactive quizzes, multimedia materials and practical examples from history, art, memorial culture, contemporary media and social networks, this module invites you not simply to identify individual antisemitic messages, but to understand how they are constructed, why they can be persuasive and what makes it possible for them to spread. The aim is to move from recognition towards critical understanding – and from critical understanding towards responsible action.
